Sony Patent Reveals The Ultimate PlayStation Move Controller That Never Was

The PlayStation Move managed to do what the Wiimote never could – provide 1:1 motion tracking in a 3D space, but many still see the controller as a simple copy of Nintendo’s popular motion device. Now, according to a Sony patent, it has been revealed that the company once had bigger plans for the Move, and were open to adding far more features to the device.

The current Move controller consists of a lit sphere and the standard PlayStation buttons, as well as a Move button and a trigger that can be used to interact with the PlayStation 3. While this setup can work with most gameplay types, the interface does limit what gamers can do. In a Sony Patent filed in May of last year, and published only days ago, it looks like the company were researching a far more powerful and sensor rich controller.


To play certain games like Killzone 3 and Socom 4 with the Move controller, gamers must use a Dualshock 3 or a Navigation control to operate the left joystick. Not only does this mean that you will need to purchase another controller, it means that only one hand will be tracked by the PS Eye. In one patented concept, Sony planned to integrate the analog stick into the main Move controller:


The patent clarifies:

The front of the controller 100 further includes a joystick 114. In some embodiments, the joystick 114 is used to control aspects of a game console such as manipulating an onscreen cursor. In other embodiments, the joystick is used to control movement or actions of onscreen avatars.

Also shown in the picture is a trackball on the base of the controller, which could possibly work as a mouse. Interesting the patent also notes:

In still other embodiments, trackball 110 is a modular element than can be swapped with other input devices such as a button cluster similar to input cluster 115.

Thus, the base of the controller could have been “swapped” around to allow countless different inputs.

Another control scheme shown is “joystick mode”, where the entire controller imitates a flight control joystick:


Showing how just how precise the controller was meant to be, the patent explains:

Applying downward pressure on the handle 102 toward the input feature 104 creates compression. Sensors between the input feature 104 and the handle 102 enable detection of changes in the applied pressure that can be mapped to control of a computer program.

The pressure sensor on the Move Sphere would allow further gametypes for developers to exploit, with the sphere able to move up and down, as shown below:


In fact, the sphere could even detect movement in any direction, allowing for two handed control of the device, with the sphere possibly also acting as another joystick.


The patent explains how the controller could work in games:

Using a human avatar analogy, movement of the input feature 104 in direction 302-1 and 302-2 is detected and mapped to correspond with nodding of the head. Thus, movement in direction 302-1 would pitch the head forward as if bringing the chin closer to the ne[ck]. Conversely, movement in direction 302-2 would pitch the head backwards, moving the chin away from the neck. Likewise, applying torque 300 to the input feature about the length axis 120 can be mapped to correlate to swiveling the head left or right.

There are many reasons why these features didn’t make the final cut, from the usability of the interface, to the drain on battery, and – most importantly – the cost of the device. While a feature-packed controller may seem ideal, an expensive Move could have easily crippled its launch.

PayPal visé par des attaques DDOS après le gel du compte de Wikileaks

Ce week-end, le blog du site de paiement en ligne a été la cible de plusieurs attaques de déni de service distribuées, entraînant plus de 75 interruptions de service. Orchestrée par la communauté Anonymous, celle-ci invite également les internautes à élire Julian Assange, le porte-parole de Wikileaks, personnalité de l'année 2010 lors du concours organisé par le Time.

L'opération est contestable, mais elle traduit l'agacement de nombreux internautes face aux tentatives politiques de faire taire définitivement Wikileaks. Depuis ce week-end, le blog officiel de PayPal est ciblé par des cyber-attaques menées par la communauté Anonymous. Ces attaques DDOS font suite à la décision du site de paiement en ligne de suspendre définitivement le compte de Wikileaks pour infraction aux conditions d'utilisation.

Selon les mesures réalisées par Panda Security, une société espagnole spécialisée dans la sécurité informatique, l'attaque DDOS contre le blog de PayPal a duré plus de huit heures et a entraîné 75 interruptions de service. Le site officiel permettant d'accéder au service de paiement en ligne (paypal.com) n'a, semble-t-il, pas été visé durant ces cyber-attaques.

Wikileaks n'est pas épargné par les attaques DDOS. Depuis le début de la diffusion des câbles diplomatiques, le site lanceur d'alerte est constamment la cible d'attaques de déni de service distribuées. "Ces attaques, et de prochaines attaques, menacent la stabilité de l'infrastructure d'EveryDNS, qui permet l'accès à près de 500 000 autres sites", a expliqué la société Dyn.

Vendredi, PayPal avait justifié la fermeture du compte de Wikileaks en invoquant une infraction à l'égard de la politique d'utilisation acceptable du service de paiement en ligne. "Nos services de paiement ne peuvent être utilisés pour des activités qui encouragent, promeuvent, facilitent ou invitent autrui à commettre des activités illégales" était-il écrit.

Une autre action moins controversée est également prévue par les sympathisants d'Anonymous : élire Julian Assange personnalité de l'année 2010. En effet, l'une des actions proposées par cette communauté est de voter massivement pour le porte-parole de Wikileaks, afin qu'il arrive en tête du concours organisé par le Time. Les internautes peuvent choisir le niveau d'influence qu'a eu chaque personnalité listée par le magazine au cours de l'année 2010.

Face au porte-parole de Wikileaks, nous retrouvons Glenn Beck (un présentateur TV conservateur), David Cameron, Recep Tayyip Erdogan (le premier ministre turc), Lady Gaga, Robert Gates (le ministre de la défense américaine), Hu Jintao, Steve Jobs, Hamid Karzai, Barack Obama, Sarah Palin ou encore Mark Zuckerberg, le fondateur du réseau social Facebook.

LCD? LED? Plasma? The How-To Geek Guide to HDTV Technology

With image technology progressing faster than ever, High-Def has become the standard, giving TV buyers more options at cheaper prices. But what’s different in all these confusing TVs, and what should you know before buying one?

If you’re considering buying a television this Holiday season for a loved one (or simply for yourself), it can be a big help to know what to look for. Take a look to find out what sets HD televisions apart, learn some of the confusing jargon associated with them, and see a comparison of four of the types of HDTVs commonly sold today.

HDTVs


HDTV versus Standard Definition

Televisions and monitors create images in the same way, illuminating combinations of Red, Green, and Blue to create single picture elements, or pixels. Different types of displays have their unique ways of doing this, but in theory, they’re all doing the same thing: creating the illusion of an image with tiny points made from combinations of various amounts of primary colors.

For years, the standard for television and home theater were Low-Def Cathode Ray Tube monitors, which in ordinary household situations would usually have a paltry 640 pixels by 480 pixels. While it was possible to create images full of detail by shooting movies with quality film stock, when it was played on low def televisions, quality could not help but be lost as high-quality film photography is forced into a low-resolution TV medium. While film photography is independent of the confinements of pixel-based video, it was impossible for consumers to view beautiful high-quality movies without purchasing copies of movie reels and setting up old fashioned theater projectors, which are also independent of resolution.

The simple answer was just to create home monitors with more and more pixels, with the modern widescreen definition at 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels. This makes each individual pixel smaller, creating images that look sharper and cleaner. However, HDTVs and computer monitors are more complicated than simply the sum of their pixels.

Important Terms to Know When Buying HDTVs

With each subsequent generation of television, the language and buzzwords surrounding Hi-Def televisions become more and more complex. Here’s a rundown of the terms you’re likely to hear, and what each of them mean.

Contrast Ratio: A number ratio resembling 1:1 or 10,000:1, which illustrates how much difference there is between the brightest whites and the darkest black colors the screen can display. The higher the ratio, the better the contrast.

Refresh Rate: How often the display hardware will redraw (or “refresh”) the image created on the screen. Videos are made of “frames,” which are flashed on screen multiple times per frame because the Refresh Rate is faster than the Frame rate. In other words, you’ll watch the same frame multiple times in a single second, because the refresh is so incredibly fast. Refresh rates are measured in Hz, or cycles per second.

The higher the refresh rate, the better your picture will be, affecting the way fast-moving images appear, reducing blurring and improving clarity. Plasma displays usually have a much higher refresh rate, with the typical screen having a 600hz refresh rate, but LCD or LED TVs have been catching up with 60, 120, 240, or even some 480hz refresh rates available.

Pixel Response Time: Similar to refresh rate, Pixel response time is the number of milliseconds the individual pixels take to react to a refreshed image. While Refresh rate deals with the time it takes the hardware to refresh the image, response time refers to how quickly the individual pixels change color from white to black or red or green. The lower the time, the better. Better response times will also create less blurry pictures for fast moving images.

CRT: Acronym for Cathode Ray Tube, the oldest commercial model of televisions and computer monitors. Cathode Ray Tubes are not preferred by modern consumers, despite excellent picture quality, because they necessarily huge, bulky, and heavy.

LCD: An acronym for Liquid Crystal Display, an extremely common model of display, found in laptops and TVs, as well as displays on alarm clocks and microwaves. LCD is a very energy efficient way of creating color displays compared to CRT.

LED: Stands for Light Emitting Diode, a simple circuit that emits light. LED is the newer addition to the HDTV bestiary, and is the new, hip product to push on consumers.

Plasma: Plasmas use the same technology that the Fluorescent lights over your head use to light televisions. Plasma screens were the Rolls Royce of television screens for years, with LED displays only recently being pushed into the forefront.

Rear Projection: Also called RPTV, rear projection TVs are effectively projectors casting high-resolution images on the back of large screens, similar to movie theater projectors, except contained in a television unit.

Composite: The yellow video cable that connects old-fashioned analog signal into televisions. Composite connections are only low-resolution, and are not ideal for HDTVs.

Component: A cable connection splitting video into three signals, allowing for HD signal.

HDMI: The standard for digital input, HDMI is a digital connection for devices to televisions, capable of output of high-def video and audio.

DVI: The PC input counterpart for HDMI, How-To Geek has already explained the differences between HDMI and DVI.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Televisions

Liquid Crystal Displays, or LCD, were the first type of monitor to provide the smaller profile, allowing for thinner displays that provide good picture quality. While they do not have the depth of color range or high contrast ratios of CRT monitors, modern LCD TVs have a good range of color that can light up even bright rooms.

Liquid Crystals do not emit any light, and have to be backlit in order to produce bright colors. (If you’ve ever owned a first generation Gameboy Advance, you’ll understand what a non-backlit LCD screen looks like.) When an HDTV is classified as an LCD television, it usually means that it is backlit with CCFLs, or Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps.

Light Emitting Diode (LED) Televisions

While LED televisions are what is currently being pushed on consumers, they are not quite the breakthrough that the commercials would lead consumers to believe. LED televisions are actually LCD televisions that are lit with Light Emitting Diodes as opposed to the standard CCFLs, discussed in the LCD section, above. They do offer certain advantages, but as they are the new tech offered to consumers, they are pricier than older models, and do not necessarily have the best picture because they are newer.

CCFL-style LCD televisions and Plasma televisions use more energy than LED lights, which are extremely energy efficient producers of extraordinarily bright light. For this reason, LEDs are offered as the “Eco-conscious” alternative to Plasma and traditional LCD. They are also free of harmful chemicals like mercury.

There are two styles of LED televisions. One is called “edge-lit”, with lights set around the television frame; the other is “full-array,” with lights set behind the screen in a grid pattern. Edge-lit models reflect light into the center of the monitor, and are the thinnest, lightest models available. Since they have fewer lights inside, edge-lit LED models are cheaper compared to full-array models. Full-arrays, however, have the best contrast ratios in LED technology.

LED does not quite live up to the contrast ratios and colors Plasma displays can create, although they do have excellent image quality and contrast ratios no standard LCD screen can hold a candle to.

Plasma Televisions

When electric currents (electrons) are passed through positively-charged gasses (protons and neutron nucleuses) inside bulbs. This soup of electrical current and ions is called “Plasma,” and emits light (photons) at different wavelengths (colors). So what does this mean for your television?

Plasma screen televisions produce some of the best image quality consumers are likely to find. Their model is well suited for larger screens, and provides some of the best contrast ratios and colors available. Plasmas are also small profile, thin monitors, capable of being hung on walls like LCD or LED televisions. Pixel response is also a key benefit to plasma televisions; their images are rendered quickly, countering image blurring effects of fast-moving images on screen, providing clear pictures. In addition to all of this. Plasma televisions also have the widest angle viewing image, with quality constant from direct, in-front viewing to side angles, delivering a better picture to a larger crowd.

While they can provide some of the best images, Plasmas are the biggest energy hogs of modern flatscreen HDTVs. While many are Energy Star compliant, LEDs consume less power and contain fewer harmful chemicals. Eco-conscious and ethical gadget buyers may wish to consider this when buying a television. Plasmas are also more vulnerable to burned-in images than LCD/LED flatscreens if users are not as careful as they should be.

Rear Projection Televisions (RPTVs)

The forgotten ancestor to theater televisions, RPTVs still have a lot to offer consumers. Since they are lit from the back by projectors, their contrast ratio is somewhat more limited, and their images look best in dark rooms. They are also thicker and deeper than any modern HDTV, which is usually a flatscreen to be mounted on the wall. While many modern projection televisions are thinner than older models, many consumers see this as a limitation, as space and viewing distance may be an important buying factor.

You’ll find that RPTVs are surprisingly lightweight, because they are almost entirely empty space. Moving an RPTV is a simple task, while some dense flatscreens may actually be heavier by comparison.

Because the images are projected, the cost of huge screens is similar to the cost of smaller units, with excellent picture quality and reasonably price on units as large as 82 inches. By comparison, Plasma or LED screens of that size would be so outrageously expensive, most stores would not care to carry them. Despite their shortcomings, RPTVs can deliver an excellent HD experience to the budget-conscious home theater.

3D-Capable Televisions

Capitalizing on the current 3D movie trend, many HDTVs are including 3D-Capable hardware in their monitors. 3D Televisions and hardware are complex, confusing, and potentially very expensive. Many readers will find that this guide doesn’t offer any clear-cut answers as to “which HDTV is better?” There is no objective answer, as each buyer will have unique needs. Video game players might enjoy the fast refresh and bright colors of LEDs, and sports and movie buffs may like the better contrast ratio and better colors available in Plasma TVs. Others still may want to recreate the theater-like experience with an enormous Rear-projection TV in a large dark room. Spend some time thinking about your own situation, and this guide can help you make a more informed decision for your own needs.

Tomb Raider : Crystal Dynamics rempile

La rumeur courait depuis le mois de juin que Crystal Dynamics bossait sur un nouveau Tomb Raider, elle vient d'être confirmée par Square Enix à travers un simple communiqué de presse, un logo et un aperçu du nouveau look de Lara Croft qui fera la couverture du prochain numéro de Game Informer, annoncé en kiosque pour le 11 décembre.

D'après les informations disponibles, cet épisode optera pour le coup classique du reboot et portera le nom tout simple de Tomb Raider, le point de départ de l'histoire étant le naufrage de l'héroïne - alors dans ses jeunes années - sur une île où elle devra lutter pour sa survie face à de féroces bestioles. Si aucune indication officielle n'a été donnée concernant le gameplay ou les plates-formes de développement, il se murmure que le jeu emprunterait la voie de l'open world plus orienté action que réflexion, avec une sortie prévue en fin d'année prochaine sur PC, PS3 et Xbox 360. Gageons qu'on en apprendra davantage sur le titre dans les jours à venir.






Mozilla adopte deux bébés pandas roux et diffuse leur vie en streaming vidéo 24/24

Les équipes de Mozilla ne sont pas seulement actives dans la promotion du web libre et ouvert, elles œuvrent et militent aussi pour la préservation d’autres espèces en voie de disparition.

Et comme le panda roux (en anglais « Firefox ») est un peu leur emblème, c’est donc assez naturellement que la fondation a adopté et pris en charge deux bébés pandas roux, nés cet été dans un zoo de Knoxville, Tennessee, US of A. Ce qui vous permettra de voir à quoi ressemble un Firefox en chair et en poils (même si je crois que le débat sur cette question animalière n’est pas encore tout à fait tranchée…).

Mais ce n’est pas tout : fidèle à sa culture du collaboratif et de la transparence, Mozilla ne pouvait faire moins que poser une webcam dans la résidence des deux charmants bestiaux afin d’en filmer les péripéties et de les diffuser en direct sur le web, et ceci 24 heures sur 24, et également de demander aux internautes de leur trouver un nom.

Vous pouvez suivre les deux pandas roux en direct via streaming vidéo sur le site qui leur est dédié Firefox Live (même si au moment où j’écris ceci le flux n’est pas accessible) . Une opération avec laquelle Mozilla espère faire prendre conscience des menaces qui pèsent sur cette espèce rare mais aussi sur d’autres engagements de la fondation.

Donc chez Mozilla, on n’aime pas juste les bons navigateurs web, on aime aussi les petites bêtes. Et moi j’aime les gens qui aiment les animaux. Enfin, pas tous les animaux quand même.

Android 2.3 SDK released, Gingerbread features revealed

Today is the big day most of us have been waiting for. Google just released the Android 2.3 software development kit (SDK) for developers and Samsung has officially announced the details of their Nexus S.

Google uploaded a quick video to show off the Android 2.3 highlights. New additions include UI refinements for simplicity and speed, faster more intuitive text input, one-touch word selection and copy/paste, improved power management, control over applications, and new ways of communicating, organizing.

Some new features in Android 2.3 that are available to developers include:

SIP-based VOIP: The platform now includes a SIP protocol stack and framework API that lets developers build internet telephony applications. Using the API, applications can offer voice calling features without having to manage sessions, transport-level communication, or audio — these are handled transparently by the platform’s SIP API and services.

Near Field Communications (NFC): Android 2.3 includes an NFC stack and framework API that lets developers read NDEF tags that are discovered as a user touches an NFC-enabled device to tag elements embedded in stickers, smart posters, and even other devices.

Gyroscope and other sensors: Android 2.3 adds platform and API support for several new sensor reading types — gyroscope, rotation vector, linear acceleration, gravity, and barometer. Developers can use the new sensor readings to create applications that respond quickly and smoothly to precise changes in device position and motion. The Sensor API reports gyroscope and other sensor changes to interested applications, whether they are running on the application framework or in native code.

Multiple cameras support: Applications can now make use of any cameras that are available on a device, for either photo or video capture. The Camera lets applications query for the number of cameras available and the unique characteristics of each.

Mixable audio effects: The platform’s media framework adds support for new per-track or global audio effects, including bass boost, headphone virtualization, equalization, and reverb.

Download manager: The platform includes a new DownloadManager system service that handles long-running HTTP downloads. Applications can request that a URI be downloaded to a particular destination file. The DownloadManager will conduct the download in the background, taking care of HTTP interactions and retrying downloads after failures or across connectivity changes and system reboots.

StrictMode: To help developers monitor and improve the performance of their applications, the platform offers a new system facility called StrictMode. When implemented in an application, StrictMode catches and notifies the developer of accidental disk or network activity that could degrade application performance, such as activity taking place on the application’s main thread (where UI operations are received and animations are also taking place). Developers can evaluate the network and disk usages issues raised in StrictMode and correct them if needed, keeping the main thread more responsive and preventing ANR dialogs from being shown to users.

UI Framework: Support for overscroll, Support for touch filtering, Improved event management, Improved motion events, Text selection controls, Activity controls, Notification text and icon styles, WebView.

Extra Large Screens: The platform now supports extra large screen sizes, such as those that might be found on tablet devices.

Graphics: Adds remaining OpenGL ES 2.0 methods glDrawElements() and glVertexAttribPointer() in the android.opengl.GLES20 class.

Le Google Nexus S est là !

Terminées les rumeurs, le Nexus S de Google est bel et bien une réalité ! Le géant de la recherche vient de mettre en ligne la page produit correspondant à ce nouveau smartphone.

Le Google Nexus S tourne sous Android 2.3 Gingerbread et offre un écran tactile multi-touch Super AMOLED de 4″ (800 x 480), un processeur Samsung Hummingbird 1GHz Cortex A8 avec 512Mo de RAM, une capacité de 16Go, le Wifi n, le Bluetooth 2.1, un aGPS, la technologie NFC, un APN de 5MPx avec flash, une caméra visio VGA en façade, l’enregistrement de vidéos en 720×480 (pas de HD donc) et une batterie 1500 mAH. Ses dimensions sont de 63×123,9×10,88 mm pour 129g.

Facebook Profile Redesign Will Coax More Data From Users: An In-Depth Review

Facebook has released a major redesign of the user profile which makes more profile info, photos, and friends immediately visible. A single panel navigation system, image-accompanied Likes, Friendship Page previews, and the ability to tag friends in your work, school, and sports info are also new. While some features have been stripped out, profiles are now much more visually compelling. By increasing the prominence of biographical information and connections, Facebook has found a natural way to get users to share more.


The last profile redesign in mid-2008 merged the wall and activity feed and gave users the content publisher. Facebook has since split the publisher into tabs for different content types, increased the number of ads per page to four, and removed profile boxes and application tabs. The recently launched Friendship Page which displays mutual content and connections of two users, and the conversion of static interests into connections from f8 paved the way for the new design.

Opt-in Rollout


Facebook is currently pushing out the profile redesign through an opt-in system which should diffuse user protests. When visiting the profile of a friend who has upgraded, users are shown an invitation to “Get the New Profile”. Alternatively they can visit the new profile about page where they can view a video or screenshots explaining the changes. A facepile of friends who’ve upgraded provides a social recommendation for switching. Users can click to implement the redesign — changing their own profile and making the profiles of their friends appear redesigned as well. From there, users are brought to their upgraded profile and given the option to take a tour of the changes. Once a user has upgraded, there doesn’t appear to be way to go back to the the old design.


New Features


Profile Info Summary


The top of a user’s profile shows a Profile Info Summary, which includes what Facebook says are “the kinds of conversation starters you share with people you’ve just met or exchange with old friends as you get reacquainted.” A user’s job position and employer, concentration and university, current city, relationship and with who, languages spoken, hometown, and birthday are all listed front and center.


Clicking the links of schools or workplaces opens the corresponding Community Page, unless it has been claimed and merged into an official Page. This means the Profile Info Summary won’t always translate into increased Page discoverability.

Many of the included characteristics can be targeted through the performance advertising system. It’s therefore in Facebook’s interest for users to provide and keep current this information. Prompts for users to enter absent information and the the increased visibility of these fields to a user and their friends should ensure this. Utility applications, especially recruiting apps such as BranchOut could also benefit from increased profile info accuracy.


This new section emphasizes the more stable elements of a person’s identity. This gives a more thorough understanding a user than the old design which gave more prominence to recent actions taken on Facebook. A user’s latest status update no longer appears at the top of their profile, making it more difficult to determine their current mood or activity.

Recently Tagged Photos


Recently Tagged Photos shows the five most recent photos a user was tagged in. Clicking one of the photos opens the light box view of the tagged photos album. This change makes photos other than a user’s profile picture immediately visible, providing a more balanced, long term look at that person’s identity.


In the tour of the redesign, Facebook stresses in bold that “privacy settings have not changed. Only people you’ve allowed to view photos you’re tagged in will see these photos.”

Users can click an ‘x’ in the top right corner of their own Recently Tagged Photos to hide that photo from the feature. Hidden photos are still visible within albums and the Photos tab. Facebook recently began allowing photo reordering within albums, but not for tagged photos. The Recently Tagged Photos hiding feature gives users more control over the first impression they give visitors to their profiles. Users should be aware that since tagged photos are subject to the uploader and their own privacy settings, their friends might not all see the same five photos.


Combined Navigation Panel


The links to navigate between a user’s wall, info, and photos which were previously in the top center of the profile have been moved to a panel below the profile picture. The combined navigation panel does centralize links, but also removes functionality and buries direct links to certain features and off-Facebook sites.


A user’s Questions and Notes, which could be optionally added as profile tabs, are also listed here in the navigation panel. There’s also new link to a dedicated “Friends” page, which replaces the “See All” button and pop up friends list from the old design. The old text links beneath the profile picture to message or a poke a user are now more visible buttons in the top right corner. A “Suggest Friends” button also appear in the top right corner of the profiles of users with few friends.



Gone are sections beneath the profile picture displaying a user’s most recently updated photo albums and shared Links. The About Me section, Likes, and a user’s website URLs have been moved to a new location within the Info navigation link. This decreases the prominence of explicit self expression, and reduces the likelihood that a user’s friends follow their links to blogs or profiles on other web services.


Users could previously highlight their upcoming Events, shared Links, and uploaded Videos by creating profile tabs for those categories. There appears to be no way to view all of a friend’s RSVPs or shared Links in the redesign. The link to a user’s tagged videos that used to be below the profile picture has been removed, and the only way to view these or their other uploaded videos is through links obscured inside the Photos navigation link.

Featured Relationships


Within the Relationships section of the profile editor, users can designate friends lists and Groups as their “Featured Relationships”. Up to three members from each selected list and Group plus ten people from the entire set of Friends appear beneath the combined navigation panel.


Users can create a new list or reorder their Featured Relationships from the profile editor. Friend Lists are private, but any Friend List a user adds to their Featured Relationships can be seen by anyone who can see their total set of friends.

Any Group without the “Secret” privacy setting can be added to Featured Relationships, which could be an interesting way of increasing discoverability of Groups. For instance, I could add my open SF Socialites Group to my Featured Relationships if I wanted people to request to join.

Featured Relationships is similar to MySpace’s “Top 8″ feature which lets users show off their best friends. While useful for learning about who are the important people in someone’s life, Featured Relationships could cause drama for users who might be guilted or coerced into adding family members, significant others, or other friends.


Enhanced Profile Info


A user’s profile information can be augmented with descriptions and people they shared those experiences with. For instance, users can list projects they’ve worked on and when, tag friends that also worked on that project, and add descriptions of the projects within their employer info, or list classes they had in college or high school and tag friends who were classmates.


When a user is tagged in the profile info of someone else, the listing they were tagged in automatically appears in their profile and they receive a notification. Similar to photos, tags are opt out, meaning there is potential for users to abuse the feature by creating false tags of their friends. The ability to alter a friend’s work info may aggravate some Facebook users, since there isn’t a privacy control to prevent this. Facebook should consider allowing users to disable friends tagging them in profile info, similar to how Places tags by friends can be disabled.

There are also new “Sports” and “Philosophy” categories in the profile editor. Users can list sports they play, add a description, and tag friends they play with. There are also special sections for adding Likes of sports teams and athletes within Sports, and “People Who Inspire You” within philosophy. Teams, athletes, and people weren’t previously distinguished from the rest of a user’s uncategorized Likes.


The Philosophy and Sports sections are now the most prominent sets of Likes in a user’s profile, appearing above the “Arts & Entertainment” and “Activities and Interests” section. The change significantly improves discoverability for sports and people Pages and Open Graph objects. Some of these new profile info categories will likely become targetable by advertisers. Sporting goods manufacturers and retailers should be eager to aim ads according to what sports users play.

Visual Interests


Likes of certain Page and Open Graph object types now have their links accompanied with pictures in the Interests section of a user’s profile info. One row of five photos is shown for each category, and they can be expanded to show photos of all the Likes in that category. Pages having an attention-grabbing picture is now more important to discoverability.


The order in which the different Page categories appear in profiles has changed. Activities and Interests have been moved from the top of the list of Likes to the bottom, reducing their discoverability. Pages and Open Graph objects without type tags or which don’t fall into one of these eleven categories still appear folded up within a “Show Other Pages” link, and don’t show pictures when unfolded.

Friendship Page Previews


A preview of the Likes and connections a user has in common with a friend is shown at the top of the right sidebar of that friend’s profile. The preview includes a link to the full Friendship Page for the two users, which was located beneath a friend’s profile picture in the old design.


The preview can include up to two photos both users are tagged in, a facepile of up to seven mutual friends, the total number of mutual friends, Groups both users are members of, Events both are attending, and mutual Likes for different categories.

Conclusion


The profile redesign will help users learn more about their friends, project a more balanced impression of themselves, and remember to keep their own information up-to-date. However, the removal of the Events and Links profile sections are unfortunate and don’t seem necessary. Overall, Facebook has succeeded in making profiles more fun and informative to browse.

Pages as a whole will be easier to discover. Celebrities, politicians, sports teams, and athletes will gain the most from the redesign, whereas Activities and Interests such as websites, small businesses, and media outlets have either gained little or are slightly worse off. We’ll track the impact of the redesign on the growth of Pages in these categories over the coming months. Advertisers will have more information to target as users fill out their profiles more completely and discover more Pages.

Facebook has found a way to encourage users to provide valuable information and improve the accuracy of their existing data set. While its unclear exactly what some of the more precise data could be used for, the profile redesign strengthens Facebook’s positions as both a communication medium and a record of its users’ lives.


Google eBookstore Opens with 3 Million Titles, Free Android and iOS Reader Apps

Google's thrown open the doors to an online bookstore stocked with over 3 million titles, which you can store and read in the cloud as if they were Gmail messages. Google's also offering free reading apps for Android and iOS devices.

Beyond Android and iOS, Google's eBookstore supports Nook, Sony readers, and other devices, as well as offering straight-up access through the web. Other retailers, like Powell's, will offer Google's eBookstore offerings for sale, and Google claims it will offer "unlimited storage" of your purchases, with your page progress synced across everything.

Google's made an effort to offer up lots of modern, popular books at reasonable price, but there are also a lot of free books in the collection, culled from Google's scanning of more than 15 million items in library archives.
