The Top 40 iPhone Apps of 2010

Editor’s note: This guest post is written by Alex Ahlund, the former CEO and founder of AppVee and AndroidApps, which were acquired by mobile application directory Appolicious. You can read his previous iPhone app picks here and here

The iTunes App Store is huge. More than 300,000 apps huge. I’ve watched this monster start from nothing and turn into a billion-dollar industry in only a few short years. We’ve been approaching this point for some time now, but it’s more apparent than ever that app exposure is of critical importance. A healthy majority of iOS app users discover new applications directly from their device as opposed to using iTunes. If you look specifically at the iPhone, the amount of real estate for discovery is only available to a very small percentage of the total apps.

Google eBookstore Opens with 3 Million Titles, Free Android and iOS Reader Apps

Google's thrown open the doors to an online bookstore stocked with over 3 million titles, which you can store and read in the cloud as if they were Gmail messages. Google's also offering free reading apps for Android and iOS devices.

Beyond Android and iOS, Google's eBookstore supports Nook, Sony readers, and other devices, as well as offering straight-up access through the web. Other retailers, like Powell's, will offer Google's eBookstore offerings for sale, and Google claims it will offer "unlimited storage" of your purchases, with your page progress synced across everything.

Google eBookstore Opens with 3 Million Titles, Free Android and iOS Reader Apps

Google's made an effort to offer up lots of modern, popular books at reasonable price, but there are also a lot of free books in the collection, culled from Google's scanning of more than 15 million items in library archives. A video demonstration of Google's new Books and eBookstore is available, but it's neither playing nor embeddable for us—we'll update soon.

Angry Birds Seasons out for Android and iOS today, free to Halloween users

Angry Birds Seasons

Rovio's highly anticipated Winter/Christmas-themed Angry Birds spin-off makes its debut today, for both Android and iOS. It has 25 new levels collectively called Season's Greedings, but the catch is that you can only play one level per day -- so they'll last you exactly until Christmas.

The Android version also comes bundled with the 45 Halloween levels that made up the Halloween special edition, which was only available for iOS. Speaking of which, Angry Birds Seasons is a free update to the iOS Halloween app.

It's also free for Android users, but, as usual on that platform, ad-supported. Rovio has said that it's working on a payment system that would finally enable Android device owners to get rid of the ads for a fee. Also coming to Android at some point in the near future is an option to make graphics lighter, so the game will behave better on older/underpowered hardware.

Angry Birds Seasons is available in the Android Market for free and should become available today in the iTunes App Store as a free update to Angry Birds Halloween.
